England Deaf rugby needs your support
Wednesday, 27 January 2010
The newest national representative rugby team is coming to Broadstreet Rugby Club at Binley Woods, Coventry. England Deaf will be playing the first of this year’s deaf rugby internationals against Wales Deaf Rugby Union on 14 February 2010. Kick off will be at 1.00 p.m.
England Deaf will be playing their first international as the latest national representative rugby union team recognized by the Rugby Football Union. Until last autumn deaf and hard of hearing rugby internationals were played under the banner of the England Deaf Rugby Union. Now that team has been recognized as national representative side and plays under its new banner of England Deaf as part of the family of England rugby teams organized by the RFU.
England Deaf is made up of deaf and hard of hearing players from all over England. In order to qualify to play for England Deaf a player must have an average bilateral hearing loss of 25db although many of the England players are profoundly deaf. In addition to organizing the national squad, England Deaf are proud to run development programmes designed to introduce young deaf and hard of hearing people to rugby union in all its forms. Most recently England Deaf have been keen to promote an exciting non-contact version of the game known as Tag Rugby which has all the speed and skill of rugby without any of the physical contact.
England Deaf are anxious to support any organization involved with deaf and hard of hearing people who would like an introduction to Tag Rugby. England Deaf is also available to support any rugby club with deaf or hard of hearing players.
Please come along to Broadstreet RFC, The Ivor Preece Field, Binley Woods, Coventry CV3 2AY on Sunday, 14 February to support England Deaf. Admission is £5 with concessionary rates for children under 16 and OAP’s.
